Zone 2 in the Wienerwald
09 Apr 2026by Felix B.
There is a version of the Wienerwald that only exists below 130 beats per minute. You notice the woodpeckers. You notice the smell of wet leaves on the Exelberg. You notice, eventually, that you're getting faster without ever going hard.
Our base-mile playbook is deliberately boring: three to four hours, conversational pace, no sprinting for town signs (this rule is broken weekly), and a hard cap on ego. The Sophienalpe loop is the club standard — enough climbing to count, never so much that anyone gets ideas.
The payoff comes in April. The riders who spent February being slow together are, mysteriously, the ones off the front when the racing starts. Slow Saturdays, fast Sundays. It keeps working, so we keep doing it.
